Music Venues

Fritzel's European Jazz Pub, 733 Bourbon Street

Hot jazz every afternoon and evening. A top venue on Bourbon Street with no cover charge. Don't miss Fritzels, especially the excellent Ryan Burrage and his Rhythm Makers who play Thursday through Sunday.

Donna's Brass Band Headquarters, 800 North Rampart Street

Superb intimate jazz venue on Rampart. A real jazz bar with a slant towards brass. Watch out for the fantastic Trombone Shorty who plays here regularly. Great music, cheap beer and a free barbeque some nights. Small cover charge for entry. A must for real New Orleans jazz fans.

Funky Butt, 714 North Rampart Street

Named after the famous signature tune of New Orleans' first jazz trumpeter Buddy Bolden, Funky Butt hosts traditional and modern jazz, funk and soul. Music in a stylish, period setting.

Spotted Cat, 623 Frenchman Street

Find the wooden hanging cat on Frenchman Street and you'll know you've arrived for Jazz, brass and funk.

Tipitinas, 502 Napoleon Avenue

Famous uptown music venue. Brass bands, jazz and an eclectic mix of others.

Snug Harbor, 626 Frenchman Street

Popular Jazz venue in trendy Faubourg Marigny. Traditional and modern jazz.

Palm Court Jazz Café. 1204 Decatur Street

Dinner Jazz Venue. It's fine to also sit at the small bar and watch. Run by the wife of George Buck, proprietor of the fantastic American Music record label.

Preservation Hall, 726 St Peter Street

Probably the most famous jazz venue in New Orleans and the top tourist destination to hear New Orleans jazz. Good music and a great venue full of character but expect to queue to get in to this tiny venue.

Check Point Charlie 501 Esplanade Avenue

Sandwiched between the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny this is an eclectic music venue featuring modern bands grubby on the outside, friendly on the inside. You can also do your laundry in this bar.

Cafe Brazil, 2100 Chartres on Frenchman

Cosy, popular venue for jazz and brass bands. Can get very crowded.

Blue Nile, 532 Frenchman Street

Jazz venue on Frenchman Street, close to Snug Harbor.

One Eyed Jacks', 615 Toulouse Street

Formerly called the Shim Sham Club, this place is definitely worth a visit for an introduction to New Orleans'’s alternative music and culture scene. Lots of modern New Orleans bands play here although the bar does not host music every night so its essential to check the schedule.

Lanes Rock'n'Bowl, 4133 South Carrollton Avenue

Gloriously tacky. Ten pin bowling, dancing and great Zydeco music can be found in this mid-city venue.

Maple Leaf Bar, 8316 Oak Street

Expect Jazz, blues, roots funk and Brass in this Uptown venue. Why not combine with dinner at the excellent Jacques-Imo's Cafe which is on the same street? See our restaurant section.
